Being a manager is all about knowing people, and believe it or not, in order to be a good manager you also have to care about people. Of course, you have to protect the business interests too (if you want to keep your job) but there's a balance to be struck here—and the best managers strike it true. See, the thing is, having a motivated and cohesive team is actually the best asset a company can have—heck, even if your morals are based on a balanced checkbook, it stands to reason that the best investment is a team that is willing to ride or die for the company.
Sometimes, though—and every manager has experienced this—there's not a match-up between the organization and an individual in your team. Maybe there's just not room for them to grow at the moment, or maybe they just have a personality that clashes with ownership and their ideals. At that point, the best thing you can do is spirit them on their way and springboard them into a better position at a better place. You'll take satisfaction in knowing that this individual is likely to zoom past you in their career and in the fact that you were able to help them do it.
That's pretty much exactly what this manager shared experiencing when they helped their employee get a new role outside of their current organization after being told to "motivate" them.
