We've all been there, standing at the front of the line at the coffee shop and the blue-haired barista with an eyebrow piercing lethargically whips the iPad around towards you before saying, 'It's just going to ask a few questions'. We don't want to tip 35% but with the next customer in line breathing down our neck and the angry cashier in front of us, the peer pressure can be insurmountable.
So if you're like me and you panic-click the percentage tip button, I have some refreshing news for you–we don't have to do that! We don't HAVE to tip just because the iPad is 'asking a few questions'. With the tipping culture getting out of hand, the cost of living going up, and the minimum wage resting at $7.25/hour, the customers are getting price gouged on every corner to make up for lost wages. Hmm, what if there was another way?
One woman on the subway in NYC recently shared a hot take about tipping culture that's remarkably refreshing. After refusing to tip for the coffee in her hand (as the barista was mean and unhelpful), one working woman shines a flashlight on the cockroach-infested underbelly of forced tips, making folks grab their torch and pitchfork in the comment section–against The Man.
