Text Message Today 19:57 I need my cat back. My ex got rid of her without my permission while I was out to eat. Piper. Blank Scottish fold mix. We went through a bad divorce. She's registered to me. I believe you paid him a small fee. I will refund that. I spent over $2,000 on her. Today 22:37 "I need my cat back," is CRAZY. It's been almost TWO YEARS. You finally back from dinner & realize your cat's gone? I've bonded with Piper, loved her; I've fed, groomed, snuggled, laughed at, and played wi

Ok It took this long because he wouldn't tell me who he gave her to. I never gave any advice it was probably whoever he is with, not me. Yes she is declawed she was scratching my child and had zero control over her nails they were always out. She had no issues with recovering from that it was done the same time she was spayed. I have all the adoption paperwork from the breeder as well as her vet records my ex husband had zero rights over her and i was not in contact with anyone, my ex never told

Hey yall. As the title states, this woman has reached out to me. She states that her husband sold her cat to me while she was gone and 'needs her cat back." She said that all before even introducing herself- which she never did. i adopted my baby, Piper in August of 2022 from a pet adoption website. She was born in May 2020. Her previous owners had her declawed and had purchased her for $2,000 USD from a breeder. I purchased her for a small fee of $50 after being in contact with the previous own

The other week I received these messages that this lady "paid a ton of money for 'that cat," and "needs her back," as her ex gave her away without her knowledge. My first couple texts were aggressive b/c I thought she was lying at first. My ex and I had been communicating with someone who we thought was this woman that sold us Piper, giving updates and sharing recent images.
  • 09
Now I might believe her that her ex set her up, sold her cat, and pretended to be her texting us after the fact, but still in the end- that is NOT my problem. I feel terrible for her if this is true, and even urged her to look into taking him to civil court. I adopted Piper without any knowledge that this may be a suspicious sale, or that anyone was losing their cat. I just found out (April 2024) after adopting her in August 2022. My baby has bonded with both me and my other cat and I am beyond

What this woman has is breeder documentation that states she purchased Piper. I have Piper microchipped with my information, as well as her recent vet statements the last couple years. We also found her on a legitimate website. I guess my question is, can she legally come at me for anything? She declawed my baby and just reached out after years. Not to mention she supports breeding. I am more than ready to take this woman to court need be.

    • PM_ME_YOUR_CATS_PAWS 7 hr. ago Not a lawyer, but you getting her microchipped goes a long way. That and the vet care provides proof she is yours The old owner would have to prove the ex stole the cat and fenced it. Could be argued that the cat was shared property (yes they are considered property) and the sale to you is valid anyways.

Onus is on her imo and I bet the most she could recover is the value of the cat IF the court sided with her. Which I'm sure an argument could be made is that $2,000 from the initial price tag or the $50 adoption fee. Either way, after almost two years, chipped, and vet visits, the cat is yours.

loadnurmom · 5 hr. ago IANAL as well... The OP says that kitty was adopted through a rescue. The rescue likely obtained her as an owner surrender. I would contact the rescue ASAP. If they are like the rescues I have fostered for, they have owner surrenders sign legal paperwork drawn up by a lawyer.
  • 15
The paperwork usually will include • The person surrendering has full legal rights to . surrender • The rescue will not under any circumstances give the cat back . • The previous owners are entitled to nothing in return for the surrender This covers all the legal bases for OP, which is why getting a copy would be important.
  • 16
If the ex surrendered but didn't have the rights to, the rescue and any new owners have zero legal liability (The ex may have liability for lying about it however) The rescue is covered even if former owner tries to sue. They did their legal due diligence, profited nothing from the cat, and are no longer in possession of the cat

CarcajouCanuck · 4 hr. ago This has got to be some sort of joke. That's not a $2000 cat.

    • slappychoppy 4 hr. ago $2k for a regular black cat. Wow. God forbid people rescue one of the thousands in shelters →

Soggy-Improvement960 6 hr. ago Is this a special black cat that was initially worth $2000?
  • 22
caralyn 4 hr. ago wait, hold on. that is the 'scottish fold' she's spent $2k on?
  • 23
JanxAngel 6 hr. ago If the breeder is any kind of reputable there would have been a clause in the contract when the cat was first purchased that stated she was not be declawed and if for any reason they couldn't keep her, she would be returned to the breeder. If this other woman either is lying about getting her from a breeder, or the breeder in question is of the backyard variety.

    • Worldly_Mirror_1555 7 hr. ago Not all heros wear capes. Piper is lucky to have you. Don't give her up. It's very unlikely this woman has any kind of case. I would block her number and ignore her demands. If in the unlikely scenario she tries to take you to court, get a one hour consultation from an attorney. They'll give you good guidance on how to make your case. The judge would likely tell her to sue her ex for the cost of the cat if she's that determined to recoup her losses.
