Never ever give anyone a loan. No matter how close you are to them or how sincerely they promise to pay you back, giving someone money and then expecting them to pay it back can only end in a disaster. They are probably not going to be very thrilled to pay you back the money, which in the least will harm your relationship, or can even create an entire dispute that will be hard to recover from.
The family in this Reddit story has made this exact mistake. After getting a nice bonus from work, OP's (original poster) mom asked her to help buy her brother a car. OP committed the mistake of agreeing, while her brother promised he would pay her back. Six months later, OP still hadn't been paid back, so she decided to take the matter to court, which did not sit well with the rest of the family.
