I got fired for not having the death certificate of my mother yet...
  • 03
So I had to leave work Sunday night (like 8pm) because my mom (who was struggling with cancer) had passed during my shift. I received an email today (Wednesday) that if I couldn't have the death certificate today I'd be terminated. The earliest I could have it is tomorrow based on how long the funeral home said it takes. Not really looking for advice, just venting and sad.

arniegrape 16h ago • I'm very sorry for your loss. Death certificates take way more than 3 days to be issued. I had to wait for about 2 weeks in 2022, if I recall correctly. If they really want some sort of proof, the funeral home that has taken in your mom can almost certainly provide a letter.

Randane 15h ago Good point! The details of a death certificate are more than enough for identity fraud.

-interwar 11h ago This sounds like small business behavior. My friend's son, whom I babysat, was murdered by his father. He had weekends and she had no choice but to give him over. It was a huge news story in my city. I asked to go to both the funeral and the wake. My boss's wife told me "[boss] doesn't like what you're doing to the schedule." And then when I wasn't smiling at work he told me l needed to "leave my personal issues at home." Small businesses have basically zero oversight and they

Coat Alternative1771. 15 hr. ago I personally would never do business with a company that did that to an employee. Such scumbags.

JTP1228 12 hr. ago even the Army never asked for that lol. I got one of my for me soldiers home the next day when her uncle died. They didn't ask for anything, other than travel plans (which is annoying but common)

StartTheDayBetter. 16 hr. ago Just be thankful they put this in writing. I'm sure the state your mother died in has a website that says how long it takes to get a death certificate.

"I'm sorry but I'm unable to accommodate your request of providing my mother's death certificate so soon after her death. According to (states) official website, which I have included a link for in this email, it take an estimate of (time) to get a death certificate. What I can provide is the following (insert other options for proof). Please let know how we can resolve this."

I would send them a link to that site and CC HR and anyone above whoever told you that. SOMEONE must know this is probably illegal and asking for trouble. Place a call to the labor department to inquire about your options if they move forward with firing you.

Radiant-Shine-8575 17 hr. ago Would love to leave a google review for your company. A lot of people is here are in fact whiny little but this is unacceptable at every level. With that said any job that is "shift work" is not worth the stress they are putting you through them.
