AITA for suggesting someone turn down their toddler's phone/tablet volume during a wedding reception speech? The table behind me at a reception dinner had a toddler watching a video at a high volume during the speeches. I looked over a handful of times, because it was distracting, hoping they would get the hint to turn the volume down. The mother eventually made a comment

about it and said "my kid didn't get a nap today". I totally understand the importance of a kid's nap schedule and that they can become tiny beasts if they don't get enough sleep. After the speeches were done, the mother confronted me in a very aggressive manner and thought I was questioning her parenting skills and screen-time choices. I hadn't said boo to her and wasn't questioning her abilities as a mother at all. In general, I thought it was common courtesy not to have the volume of electron

OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the a ple: I looked over to the source of the distraction hoping they would get the hint to turn down the volume. The looks were taken as looks of judgment rather than a subtle hint to fix the volume issue. Maybe I'm the as ☐ le for staring.

feminist1946 NTA. This is why child free weddings are becoming more popular. Mothers think the world revolves around them. They are encouraged in this view by other mothers who think they get a pass for imposing their offspring on the rest of us. Right now I am at a high end restaurant where children are screaming and running around and babies are crying. It so adds to my experience.

74Magick NTA I'm on Team Kid Free when it comes to weddings. 314 Reply Share occurrenceOverlap I'm on team weddings are for the whole family, but kids and parents need to learn basic courtesy. Either the parent teaches the kid how to behave at an important event (or at least gets them headphones), or the parent should bring the kid outside so they don't disturb everyone else.

ReviewOk929 - 7 hr. ago NTA - The lack of social awareness some people have is amazing. It's just not appropriate to let your kid. have an iPad or equivalent on volume at a wedding let alone during speeches. Nothing says entitled more than this.

SmoochyBooch · 7 hr. ago . edited 7 hr. ago NTA-headphones exist!! My kid is pretty well regulated and we use screens as a last resort. If I needed him to be quiet I would put headphones on him or let him draw on the Sketchbook app on my phone silently.

lattelattelatte3000 6 hr. ago My kid didn't have a nap. Okay? It's now everyone at the wedding's problem? Take the kid outside during the speeches. Incredibly, these speeches are more important than your kid who doesn't even know they're at a wedding! The brazenness of some parents to use their kids as excuses to do the rudest is astounding. You were absolutely questioning her parenting skills... and her general adult human social decorum?
