Whatever Happened to Insomniac’s Wolverine? The Wait, the Hope, and the Missed MGU

A quick detour: remember X-Men Origins: Wolverine (the game)?

Here’s a hot take: that game was awesome.

Yes, the movie was a dumpster fire. But the tie-in game? Genuinely incredible. It was brutal, fast, visceral - Logan felt like an unstoppable force of rage, ripping enemies apart in a way no other superhero game had captured at the time. His health bar literally showed his flesh ripping away until he healed in real time. It was gory, over-the-top, and absolutely perfect for the character.

Ever since then, I’ve been waiting for someone to give Wolverine the AAA treatment he deserves. And if anyone can do it, it’s Insomniac.

The dream of the MGU

When I saw how good Insomniac’s first Spider-Man game was, I thought: This is it. This is the beginning of the Marvel Gaming Universe.

In my head, it was simple:

First, a couple of solo games - Spidey, Wolverine, maybe a Doctor Strange or Black Panther.

Then, every few years, we’d get the big crossover event: an Avengers-style team-up where you could play as your favorite heroes, swapping between them mid-battle as they fought some giant cosmic threat.

Tell me you wouldn’t throw money at that.

But it never happened. And honestly, it probably never will. These games take years to make. If it takes six years to get from Spider-Man to Wolverine, the idea of coordinating multiple standalone games into one big crossover feels impossible. At least in my lifetime.

So instead, I’ll just keep daydreaming about the MGU that never was.

The update we’ve been waiting for

Okay, so what’s actually happening with Wolverine?

The good news: Wolverine is still alive. Sources say it’s on track for a 2026 release. That’s a long wait, but at least it hasn’t been quietly cancelled. Venom is also in the works, though further behind - think 2027 at the earliest, and more “Miles Morales-sized” than a full game.

So no, Wolverine hasn’t been lost to development hell. He’s just… marinating. Which honestly makes me more excited. I want Logan to feel weighty, angry, violent, and unstoppable. He’s not Spidey. He’s not quippy or flashy. He’s claws and grit and rage. That takes time to get right.

Old man Logan

Do I wish we were already playing Wolverine by now? Absolutely. Do I wish the MGU had been real instead of just in my head? Of course. But I’ll take what I can get.

Insomniac already proved they know how to make superhero games that balance story, combat, and heart. If anyone can do justice to Logan, it’s them.

So yeah, it’s been quiet. Too quiet. But 2026 isn’t that far away. And when those claws finally extend again, I’ll be first in line.
