JOB OFFER LETTER RE: LETTER OF OFFER OF EMPLOYMENT Des

Employer is refusing to send me an offer letter. Tells me to come there instead.
  • 03
I applied for a blue-collar job in a different part of the country (4 hour flight), and the employer is saying they can hire me for it.
  • 04
However they are not sending me an offer letter right now. I asked for it and they Instead told me "Just come here and we can get you started right away!".
  • 05
What complicates this even more is that I have a current job which I have to resign from. Plus there's the cost of moving. I don't want to forfeit my current flat and job only to get
  • 06
there and have them tell me oh sorry we can't take you on, there's been a change ". Why would someone refuse to send an offer letter!?

ColumbusMark · 19 hr. ago Don't. You. DARE!!! This has “SCAM" written all over it.

Prize_Bass_5061 · 15 hr. ago Nobody is getting a CS job in the current market. Programmers with 7+ years of experience are taking jobs at McDonald's after losing their savings to 2 years of unemployment.

There's posts on r/cscareerquestions about the ideal TRADE job to switch to that will help pay off the student loans CS grads have incurred.

SubzeroCola OP. 9 hr. ago Programmers with 7+ years of experience are taking jobs at McDonald's after losing their savings to 2 years of unemployment. Really? I thought it was only entry-level people who were struggling because that's what the market is saturated with right now (junior devs).

SubzeroCola OP. 19 hr. ago I talked to the employer and they are legit. I know a scam when I see one. To me this sounds like they want to discuss something under the table.
  • 12
    • Tyrilean 18 hr. ago They want you to uproot your life and be isolated in a new part of the country when they hit you with that lowball offer that you'll have to take because you've already uprooted your life.
  • 13
Keep looking. I can't think of many blue collar jobs worth moving across the country for, let alone being this skeevy.
  • 14
ColumbusMark · 18 hr. ago . Exactly. Think about this, OP. Why are they trying to recruit a blue- collar worker from a part of the country that's a 4-hour flight away?! Everything about this screams "shady/scam/illegal.”
  • 15
Grand_Cauliflower_88 · 18 hr. ago He didn't say they recruited him. He probably applied for the job. I have worked all over this country n unless it's done kind of professional career he ain't getting a offer letter. I been thru this many times they say yup you
  • 16
sound good get here n we will hire you. For every 10 out of state inquiries 2 will show up. When one is moving long distance it's better to put feelers out n contact like 5 solid jobs so you have a choice when you get there. Companies know this. They know how the real world works.
  • 17
SubzeroCola OP. 9 hr. ago Yeah I applied for the job. They told me they would send an offer letter but never did. I then contacted them next week (multiple times) and they told me they already hired someone for that position but they can put me in a different position. It's almost like they
  • 18
were trying to accommodate me. I still don't know why they would be scared of the situation where I sign the letter but don't show up. So what? Can't they just retract the position saying " He never showed up!"?
  • 19
ColumbusMark · 2 min. ago Methinks that you may be desperate for a job, and that you're dreaming that this is a "real thing," or a "real opportunity." But - already - they're giving you the "different position" ruse. It is NOT a "real thing."
  • 20
SubzeroCola OP. 18 hr. ago when they hit you with that lowball offer They aalready told me the hourly rate and asked me if it was ok. It was pretty low, but only after I confirmed it, did they say "Oh great, than you can come and we'll get you started "

phosphenescove · 10 hr. ago · edited 10 hr. ago I knew someone that did this for a $17/hr cage wash technician job cleaning mouse and rat cages in a lab... they moved 700 miles (Kentucky to Delaware). They were fired a month later lol. I guess OP might be this desperate?
  • 22
SubzeroCola OP. 9 hr. ago Why were they fired though? Did they do something wrong or did the company not have the finances to cover theh position?
  • 23
phosphenescove . 9 hr. ago They were horrendous at their job, not saying you will be, but they were certainly quite desperate for a job to move that far for only $17/hr
  • 24
SubzeroCola OP. 9 hr. ago Could it be that their relocation was more about the location than the job?
  • 25
phosphenescove · 9 hr. ago It wasn't actually, they told me they moved just for this job. I know it's hard to believe really.
  • 26
Suspicious-Spare1179 · 19 hr. ago Op everyone thinks this is a scam except you pull the t ger if you're - gonna do it - just dont blame us when you end up scammed haha
  • 27
SubzeroCola OP. 19 hr. ago I run into scams often and can usually sniff them out. This doesn't feel scammy, it feels shady.
  • 28
AwkwardBucket - 19 hr. ago If they're not willing to send you an offer letter is this really a company you want to work for? Something very off about the situation. I can just see you doing all this work to move out there and when you finally show up they decide they only really want to pay you half what they said they would.
  • 29
SubzeroCola OP. 19 hr. ago But they still have to make me sign an offer letter even after I get there right? Or do people sometimes start a job without an offer letter?
  • 30
rossarron. 19 hr. ago Even with an offer letter you can still turn up and find no job or a lower wage job, protect your self and apply to professional companies this fly by night firm is pulling a con.
  • 31
SubzeroCola OP. 19 hr. ago Every company I apply to ends up playing games like this lol. Not kidding. I have no choice but to play the game.
