Em Follow @Irradiated Mouse The kids at school who got 100% attendance had an ice cream van come into school on Thursday (it was a ridiculously hot day) and all got an ice cream, the ones that had had a single day off had to sit in the boiling hot playground with nothing. I hate attendance based rewards

Em @Irradiated Mouse 1d Replying to @Irradiated Mouse How tf is this not discrimination against kids with health issues, and even ones who aren't but eg have no control if their parents take them to school that day or send them in late (late kids also wouldn't get the reward)

Yana | Fluff | Smooth @ttmfrwts. 1d Replying to @Irradiated Mouse That's just plain mean. I get so angry when my kids get sent letters with less than 100% attendance through sickness. "She had Scarlett fever you planks, and you're marking it against her."

Stoma Babe @stomababe 1d Replying to @Irradiated Mouse . I would turn up to the school and bring my daughter the biggest ice cream sundae I could find if she was one of those being punished!

Peter Cooper @cooperx86.1d Replying to @Irradiated Mouse Agreed! Our school let them all have ice cream. Imagine if workplaces tried to pull this .. you get a bonus for not taking any sick days.. they'd be taken to court in a hot minute.

The new guy ⭑@Bitofhonesty + 1d Replying to @Irradiated Mouse Yeah that's not good for young kids who can't get themselves to school, or any kids who rely on their parents.

Avens O'Brien @avensobrien Replying to @Irradiated Mouse Follow I hate rewarding or punishing people for things that are outside of their control. Attendance is something that a child can't necessarily control. They might be sick, their parent might be sick, there could be any number of reasons they can't attend school. Life isn't fair. But rewards and punishment should be based on controllable factors. It teaches kids how to have more of an *internal* locus of control instead of an external one

Moth @timotheeej · 1d Replying to @Irradiated Mouse I never really understood Perfect Attendence rewards in primary school. That's a parental thing statistic more than anything. Would have kids going through perpetual punishments cause their parents dropped them off late.

Mike M @Mike_TnC-1d Replying to @Irradiated Mouse Sounds like they spend more time working out how to punish kids than teaching them

Prof Elaine Chalus @EHChalus. 1d Replying to @Irradiated Mouse This obsession with 100% attendance not only affects children with health and/or anxiety issues, but it also puts pressure on children to be in school when they are ill (& perhaps infectious).

Jake Arkinstall, PhD @JakeArkinstall Replying to @Irradiated Mouse Goodhart's Law in action. Follow 1) hey look, there's a correlation between attendance and grades. 2) so let's punish bad attendance and reward good attendance. 3) hey look, there's no correlation between attendance and grades.

Marshall Wheeler of... @MarshallWheels Replying to @Irradiated Mouse Follow Gotta teach em young before they get that factory/cubical job

Mike Holden @mikeholden. 1d Replying to @Irradiated Mouse Sounds like a great way to train a workforce that focuses more on showing up than on doing the work. Meanwhile, the smartest kids are getting all their work done in less time and taking the occasional day off to recharge and work on their side hustle.

JayGee @nostologic 23h Replying to @Irradiated Mouse Perfect attendance incentivizes poor behavior. If you're sick it's more important to be present than to consider getting everyone sick. Never take time for yourself the company requires you to be there. Schools are factory farms.

arls @Arlmeme • 1d Children who got 100% attendance awards in school had parents who didn't care if their child was sick or if they infect other children

Claire Allan / Freya Ken... Follow @ClaireAllan Attendance based rewards are ableist AF - pass it on.

Rhea Liang @LiangRhea • 1d Kids who get sick Kids who are bullied Kids without transport Kids with struggling parents Kids with caring responsibilities Kids excelling at activities outside school ...*all* punished for <100% attendance? This makes no educational sense. What are we trying to 'reward'?
