Who remembers the treasure chest at the dentist's office? After getting your teeth prodded, scraped, and otherwise bludgeoned by the dental tech, a man smelling of mint and orthodontic prosperity would come in, shake your mom's hand, and say you've done a good job keeping the cavities at bay. And even if all of that was untrue, every kid would still be rewarded with a rummage through ye olde treasure chest. I don't know why this seems like a core memory from every 80s kid's childhood, but the traumatizing thought of getting your teeth pulled out of your head because of a cavity was always softened by a monster-shaped finger puppet or (ironically) a packet of Big Chew Bubble Gum.
There are a lot of strange childhoodisms that Gen X shares from the 80s. All of us enjoyed our fair share of 6" long carpet, sketchy playgrounds, and changing the channel on the big TV for our older siblings. But like the monster-shaped finger puppets, our woes in life were always squashed by the most benign things. If our parents worked all day and left us to fend for ourselves, we could be entertained by putting a record on or playing with the spring thing behind the front door. Gen X was innovative, independent, and could make a bike ramp out of anything!
So now that everyone's grown and the thrill of the dental treasure chest has faded, we can find solace in the finer moments in life that make us chuckle.
