Hello, fellow animation fans! Modern anime character designs are sleek, polished, and more naturalistic than those of the 90s, which does make for an impressive viewing experience, but there is something quite comforting and nostalgic about the exaggerated, big-eyed, sometimes very long-legged designs of the 90s. Those who grew up watching Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, Yu-Gi-oh!, Detective Conan, Cardcaptor Sakura, Pokémon, and YuYu Hakusho on TV are well acquainted with the style. While these anime have different authors and illustrators behind them, they were similar enough to be obviously distinct from Western animation, even to the eyes of children. You always knew that these shows were different from Kim Possible, Hey Arnold!, and Spongebob.
Now, imagine a world where these animations produced by Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Disney, and Pixar, were in fact made by Japanese studios. This is the world that digital artist Brenni Murasaki channels when she redraws iconic characters and scenes from our favorite childhood TV shows and movies in a 90s anime style. Enjoy perusing through her glorious work below!
