TIFU with a blanket on a cat tree. Not sure if it's technically today, because the result of my actions happened at about 2 am this morning, but the initial action happened yesterday.

So, we just adopted a sweet little 2- year-old female calico cat about 2 weeks ago. I am already obsessed with her and love her to pieces. (Cat tax in comments, if that's allowed.) We call her Murray.

Last week I got her a giant cat tree and placed it in front of a bedroom window, as she still spends a good portion of her time in there as she gets adjusted and gets familiar with our dog.
  • 05
She's not terribly timid or anything, but she's still a little jumpy and clearly still getting used to living here. All told though, things are going well.

So this cat tree was the best and most expensive that they had at the pet store. It has all kinds of cool levels and places to hide and a proper sleeping spot at the very top. Just under that little bed is a platform. It's upholstered in some very soft, fuzzy material in order to make it a more comfortable hangout spot, but you can still feel the hard material beneath the cloth.

It took her a while to discover the tree and start liking it. I had to tempt her onto it with treats and toys, but after a few days she started using it, seems to enjoy chilling on the platform directly underneath the little bed, or the second-highest surface on the tree.

I was thrilled that she was getting up there, claiming her space, and being a confident cat. I wanted to make the spot as comfortable as I could for her. So I folded up the soft, fuzzy blanket that the shelter sent home with her and placed it on top of her favorite platform, hoping to add some cushion to it.

Winner! She was up there pretty much all day and night. She passed out completely up there and it looked like that was where she'd be spending the night last night.

What I failed to consider was how much she would move and shift aduring her repose, and that without anything attaching the blanket to the tree, it was essentially a ticking time bomb for disaster.

I was actually awake (hard time falling asleep) and admiring her when she shifted around one more time to get comfy. I saw it happening, but had absolutely no time to react. This cat tree is almost 6 feet tall. As she moved, the fuzzy blanket slipped, and off the tree she fell! My dresser with some small items on top is right next to it, so she hit the dresser on the way down, knocking some things into the floor.

I'm sure it scared the out of her. She ran under the bed and I couldn't see her to check on her. I was obviously worried that she might be hurt; normally a fall from that height is nothing to a cat, but she did hit some things on the way down. I felt like an absolute idiot - of course? How could I not have seen this coming?!

Although I have to admit, I did have to stifle a giggle or two. She's always so graceful and dainty. This was not that.

Long story short, she is totally fine, and was even back up on her favorite perch when we woke up this morning. Minus the death blanket, obviously.

TL:DR - New cat in our home, in wanting to give her everything, I gave her potential bodily injury instead. Got her a tall cat tree and placed a folded fuzzy blanket on top of an already fuzzy surface. Cat loved it, but each tiny move she made brought her closer to the inevitable result of falling to the ground on the middle of the night, waking her from a dead sleep. No worries, cat is fine and still loves her tree. All is well. I'm a little smarter. Emphasis on a little.

Pathetic Peripatetic7 OP 5 days ago Lol she's been pretty cool about the whole thing! She definitely does rule the roost. Treats are absolutely in order!
