40-year-old calls herself 'first time mom' when new baby arrives despite having a 24-year-old son, son storms out: 'She said something that really hurt me'

If the show Gilmore Girls taught us anything, it's that parents who have their kids while they're very young tend to have different relationships with their kids. Since they're still growing up themselves while trying to raise a young one, the lines between parent and friend and sibling get a little blurry. Becoming a parent happens overnight, but becoming a self-assured guardian takes some people a lifetime. You have to put the work into becoming a functional, self-sustained parent, and it's incredibly hard to do that when you're a teenager. 

Most teen parents are just scraping by, and usually relying on help from family members to execute the hard work of rearing a child. That's the position one mother was in, until much later in life when she got a second chance at being a new mom. But the way she handed that with her adult child left him feeling unwanted.
