I paid to relocate myself to Japan for a job with a US company and got fired without cause after ONE week

I interviewed for a SOFA status job with as a civilian in February 2024, got an offer in March, and arrived on August 1st.

On August 9th I'm told I'm being let go because they don't think I'm a "good fit." I have barely had any training except memorizing a script and helping set up a display. I was still getting logins and credentials for training modules, etc.

My boss tells me that there are plenty of jobs on base and "you've got my number." Total lip-service, he ghosted me and hasn't responded to any of my messages. There are NOT plenty

of jobs on base, let alone ones that would let me remain in Japan with SOFA status. Now that I'm no longer employed by everything that allowed me to be on base is invalid, so I can't do anything to look for work in person.

When I contacted a higher up with MAS to ask about getting my pay for the week, paperwork related to being let go, and if there is anyone in HR to talk to. I get told there is no paperwork, I'm just fired, "I'm HR," and a non-answer about payment for my work.

I still have zero information on how much and when I will be paid and I have 90 days from August 1st to find a new SOFA status job

or return to the US because I was required to enter Japan on a tourist visa. I can't find a regular job without having to leave the country and re-enter at a later date on a work visa.

I'm hoping that I can find something here in Japan, but I am talking to my parents about staying at their house since I have no place of my own to return to in the US.

Altruistic_Lock_5... • 3h ago You are being screwed over by a person who has no qualifications to make a judgment call. I would yell to high heaven about pay. A paid return ticket to America , and start contacting the home office. You signed a contract to move across the world, they cannot just gaslight you.

LT_Bilko 3h ago If you believe there was some sort of gross mismanagement, the DoD has a hotline specifically for contractors to file complaints. It's effectively an Inspector General

equivalent. Might be a good place to start asking. I don't remember the specific name, but I'm sure google can help you there.

ios_static 4h ago . If you must stay in Japan, I would look into getting an English teaching job temporarily. I recommend working with the college students. They are always hiring but the pay isn't good

Dense-Cause-5920 • 3h ago I know you said you can't work under a tourist visa. But I'd suggest contacting a company to teach English etc, and have them work with you so you can get a workers visa if possible. That way you can stay and work and your status in the country will have changed from visitor to temp worker

4Bforever 2h ago • This is absolutely horrible. If I left this apartment for somewhere else and that didn't work out I would be homeless. I'm sure you're in a better position than I am because you're in the military so you're able- bodied, but still this is horrible.
