Would you have become a ghost and haunted your old school, if you had the choice to do so?

I always found it intriguing that actual ghosts were roaming Hogwarts, and if I am not mistaken, it was never actually explained how one ends up as a ghost. I can't think of a reason one would decide they want to haunt a school for the rest of their existence, no matter how cool that school might be. Not to mention Moaning Myrtle, which is another riddle of itself, because why would one want to haunt a bathroom of all places?

That made me think that maybe becoming a ghost is not really a choice, and those people just accepted their fate at some point, But then why is Hogwarts the only place we ever see one? Wouldn't we encounter ghosts at other key wizarding locations, like Gringotts or Hogsmeade?

If I had to become a ghost, I probably would also choose to haunt Hogwarts, that castle is full of surprises to explore for centuries, not to mention new students every year, which sounds like a decent fate after all.
