I'm male. I recently applied for a job at a health insurance company's call center. I have extensive experience in working customer service. Combined I have maybe about 9 years experience. 6 years at one, 2 years at another after that one during the pandemic and almost a year at the one I'm currently at. Things aren't GREAT at the call center I'm at, but I had a friend tell me they were hiring at another one for a little more than I'm making right now. So I applied.

Everything seemed to be going great, I spoke to the recruiter and she scheduled an interview. Right off the bat things felt a little bit shaky the interview was supposed to be with the department's director and the head of the HR department, the director wasn't able to make it so I had to continue from home over the phone, I was ok with it. The in-person interview went GREAT. The over the phone interview I was quizzed about some of the department's duties and I answered them to the best of my ab

The recruiter called me with a job offer for LESS than she initially stated (19- 20/hr) they offered me what I'm currently making (18/hr) so it really makes no sense for me to start a whole new job to be paid the exact same thing. I tell them to "let me think about it". I hang up, and not 5 mins later I get a call back from the recruiter and she said "Great news! I spoke to the director and he agreed to 19/hr" so I say it and take the job. They tell me I need to go in and meet with the HR lady o

I get there and I'm only met with the HR lady. She states "So I'm not sure if they told you about some of the policies we have regarding appearance?" I said "yeah no earrings, tattoos covered, and business professional attire". She replied "yeah..those are some.., how long is your hair?" I've been growing my hair since 2018 I always keep it neat and tidy tied up in a bun when I'm in a professional setting. I replied "it reaches my waist" she then said "ohh well for men it can't go past your shou

I told her "Im not cutting my hair, that's not something I can do" not just for my own personal reasons but honestly if she had to ASK ME how long my hair was, does it matter? If you can't tell just by looking at my hair how long it is it SHOULDN'T matter! She then said "I wish they would've told you, now I feel bad about making you drive back down here." She asked if I had anymore questions I pointed at

her and said "So it's only men who can't wear earrings then?" Because she was wearing her earrings and she goes "yeah they're very traditional here" I didn't wanna be THAT GUY and go "that's kinda sexist isn't it?" So I just said "oh ok". She said "ill see if they can make an exception for you but generally the answer is no and I'll send these forms home for you if they do so you don't have to drive here again."

Anyways I got no call lol and my friend. who initially told me about the job got hired for 20 and I was offered 18 because apparently I didn't answer the questions I was quizzed on well enough BUT my friend who hadn't been in an office job for 3 years answered "I haven't been in an office job for a while but with a refresher course I'd be fine" and they just GAVE him the max amount lol. Guys I'm sick of this corporate and I understand Walter White more than ever lol.

Told them I won't be doing. that until it's mandatory for men to wear makeup as well. Hang in there. Jobs can't dictate how you spend your paychecks or what you do with your body.
