When you tour a tenement building on the Lower East Side, you're probably not going there to get hot tips about cramming as many kids as possible into an apartment. You're going to see how immigrants in the late 19th and early 20th century lived and how far we've come regarding housing and human rights. No landlord, even the slimiest landlord in the world, would rent a one-bedroom apartment to a family with two adults and five kids. Even if he wanted to, there are laws against having that many people in an apartment that size because it's unsafe. I'm not saying that every kid needs their own bedroom, but refusing a child the fundamental dignity of their own mattress is wrong, no matter your financial situation. The mom in this viral TikTok proudly proclaims that her four kids sleep together in the living room while she and her husband sleep in the bedroom.
