The ‘Stranger Things’ Animated TV Show Announcement Gone Wrong: ‘Why does this look like a mobile game?’

Still, Stranger Things fans were absolutely hyped for season 5, the series finale, which was… not especially good, according to popular opinion.

The finale episode itself has been the target of dozens of thinkpiece articles, YouTube videos, and podcast episodes. The final episode landed on such an awkward note that "Conformity Gate" developed: a fan-driven theory that a secret actual final episode was set to be released.

That didn't happen. But what did happen was that Netflix gleefully added fuel to the fire, releasing a documentary about the making of the final season of the show, highlighting production and writing issues throughout.

Now, seemingly released at a breakneck speed, there's more Stranger Things to consume. This time, it's an animated TV series called Stranger Things: Tales from '85  — although, upon first seeing the trailer, you'd be forgiven for thinking this is actually a video game or a mobile game ad.

Twitter/X wasted no time — X users collectively took a deep breath and howled with laughter about the art style, presentation, a new character, and so on:

Here are the hilarious reactions!

At least a few people had an interesting theory about the animated series’ look: they believe the look is very similar to the Telltale games catalog. Even if you’re not immediately familiar with Telltale, you may have played their games. They’re the studio behind video game adaptations of Game of Thrones, The Walking D*ad, Batman, and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Oh, and in 2017, 9 long years prior, they were literally working on a Stranger Things game that was set in 1985. Sadly, the studio did shut down in 2018, but their vision for the Stranger Things animated universe is on view right now with this new show.

Some Twitter users noted that the trailer featured a mysterious new character who wasn’t in the show at all, which is an interesting road to take while effectively rebooting a very recently finished show. While the casting for all the major characters has been revealed, with Brooklyn Davey Norstedt voicing Eleven, Luca Diaz voicing Mike, Benjamin Plessala voicing Will, Braxton Quinney voicing Dustin, and so on, there are some voice actors whose roles haven’t been revealed yet. I’m excited to see the character played by Marty Supreme star Odessa A’zion, along with actors Janeane Garofalo and Lou Diamond Philips, whose voice roles also remain a mystery.

However, although I think the art style looks ok-ish, it is pretty funny that people see this animation style and can’t help but think about a certain type of ad. We’ve all seen them a million times — it’s often some sort of disheveled woman with stink lines coming out of her armpits, crying because her boyfriend left her, and you’re instructed to clean her up or design a house for her. Here's one example:

Downloading one of these games is a mistake most of us make once. That’s because the gameplay in the ad literally never happens in these games — they’re usually just simple puzzles or Candy Crush ripoffs. They’re basically made to show a ridiculous amount of ads to the toddlers who are handed Mommy’s iPad and can’t tell the difference yet between a good game and a terrible one. It’s given that animation style a bad name!

Anyway, it’ll be interesting to see what the new Stranger Things: Tales from ‘85 has to offer. The 2017 game was slated to take place from Will’s POV. However, in Tales from ‘85, the character of Dustin will take the spotlight. Cool! In addition, this newest spinoff will take place between seasons 2 and 3, so I guess there’s more to explore in that segment of the show’s history.

What else is left to mine from the Stranger Things cinematic universe? What would you like to see; whose stories are you most interested in?
