weratedogs A British man was hiking the Santa Cruz circuit when he became separated from his group on the second day of his trek. He was hoping to reach the Unión pass at 15,000ft above sea level but the route was covered in snow, ice, and thick fog. As soon as he realized he was on his own, a little dog appeared seemingly out of nowhere. The man said he decided to trust the little dog's knowledge of the mountain, and began following him. The dog led him right to his

destination, as if he had done so for a thousand hikers before. They were reunited with his group, and from that moment on, the little dog remained close to them as they continued their journey. A local later explained that dogs in the area often follow hikers up the mountains as if they were trained guides, and that this little dog must've thought he needed some guidance. 14/10 (courtesy @elgueroingles)

zarazeta This is the doggie's purpose, he is a spirit guide. I'm Peruvian and have met plenty of these doggies, they are known by the locals and some of them even tried to give them homes but they will always choose the mountains and to accompany hikers, making sure nobody stays behind.

They cheer you up when you are almost giving up and without words they tell you: "You are almost there, you are not alone, I'm here with you". Thank you to all the perrito guides I have met in this lifetime.

garimasaini This dog does not need to be adopted. I keep saying this to everyone who goes up in the mountains and has this insane urge to adopt local strays. They are living in a better place than most of us. Cleaner air, cleaner water and miles and miles of play area. These dogs do not need to be confined to a home. They know the geography of the

area. These dogs do not need to be confined to a home. They know the geography of the area better than most humans, they have adapted and evolved. Please don't bring them to cities, to tiny apartments.

shapesrobin I did the Santa Cruz trek last year and the same dog followed us for the whole trek. Our guide told us his name is Guardi and he tags along with groups a lot but he has a family who live somewhere near the beginning of the trek
