The method is simple, yet devastatingly effective. Pit employees against one another—whether through selective praise, whispered comparisons, or by assigning overlapping responsibilities—and watch the fireworks.

Perhaps the team is debating who gets credit for that "innovative" idea, or maybe they're just questioning Greg's mysteriously larger bonus (I don't mind, Greg is a caring, appreciative supervisor and an overall amazing and gnarly dude! 'Sup Greg? How was your weekend?).

Either way, the workforce is too distracted trying to understand what Greg is doing to fool the big dogs (not me though obviously, 'preciate ya Greggy boy!) to notice that management just restructured the benefits package… again.

The genius of divide and conquer lies in its elegance, the kind that makes coming to work an eternal chess game where employees are pawns and the CEO is the smug player grinning from the other side of the board. Checkmate.

Today's story is about what can only be described as a masterclass in corporate "Divide and conquer", a warehouse worker at Everyone's Favorite Low-Price Retail Giant™ recently discovered that his Christmas bonus - a generous 15% discount valid for approximately 27 minutes - slightly differs from his supervisors' $11,000 cash bonuses. Yup, eleven thousand actual dollars.

Our dedicated laborer, who spends his days performing the apparently trivial task of keeping the entire supply chain functioning, received a coupon that will expire before the next time he puts his hand on his lower back again. Meanwhile, his supervisors, whose primary responsibilities include perfecting their gaming skills and occasionally remembering they have employees, each received enough money to buy roughly 11,000 items from the dollar menu.
When asked about the disparity, corporate representatives were too busy to comment.
I wish they would just do something like a small gesture, just to show their appreciation. Maybe offer an additional 5% discount, valid only during a lunar eclipse and while standing on one foot (Terms and conditions apply) or something.
So, remember everyone: Hard work is its own reward. Because apparently, that's the only reward you're getting.
