Neighbors give way their dog because they 'don't have time for it', then immediately get caught with a new puppy, causing the new adopted to be outraged

Adopting a dog is an amazing experience. We think that the vast majority of dog owners would agree with that. Adopting a puppy or a senior dog, a sick dog, a rehomed dog or any other… it doesn't matter which one. What matters is that they are a part of the family, and we are going to treat them as such. So, the same way as with our human family, sometimes, the best decision that we can make for them is giving them a new place to live, a better place, someplace where they will be cared for better. 

It's hard. After adopting a doggo and being so happy to have to make the decision to rehome them, but sometimes, under some very special circumstances, that might be the best choice for them. That is not the story here. You might think it is in the beginning, but it is not. The neighbors who gave away their family member because they "didn't have time" for it then immediately got a new puppy… they're not one of the good ones.

  • This person obviously did the best that they could have when adopting this dog. This dog is not the one that we are worried about anymore. Now, we're worried about the new puppy, because if this family showed so little care to their previous canine family member, who's to say that they won't do the same to this one?

    This girl showed up in my yard about a month and a half ago. When I found her owners, they said, "you can keep her if you want; I don't have time for her." It was about 20 hours between me finding the dog and finding the owner, and they didn't even know she was missing! They said they'd been planning to sell her since they don't have time for her but had been too lazy to get around to it.

    But let me tell you, she's been absolutely wonderful! So well-behaved and sweet. So I told the owners I'd be happy to have her and to take any food, toys, treats, etc off their hands if they don't need it. They brought me half a small bag of food, not even a leash or collar.

    This morning, as I'm walking my wonderful girl, I pass the owner's house and see someone walking inside carrying a 2-4 month old puppy. As I'm walking back he catches me and asks if I have any dog food I can spare. He says he's just dog sitting that puppy and doesn't have any food and was about to walk to the store to get some. (Of course I gave him some food.)

    The old owners didn't have time for this amazing and chill 4.5 year old (who maybe didn't even have a single toy), but they do for a young puppy? A young puppy they didn't even leave food for the dog sitter?

  • And although we know that you totally didn't sign up for it, if you can, when they do abandon the new puppy, because it's definitely something that could happen, we hope you could take him in too. And if not that, then at least take him in long enough to find him a worthy family, with people as kind as you.

    QuantumGyroscope • 7d ago • I would report these people for neglect and specify that they have now adopted another dog after offloading their first dog on you. (I use the word offloading to paint a scene. Not to say that the dog is a burden to you now.) She seems very sweet from what you've described. Take good care of her and make sure she doesn't get back to that h I hole. Those people do not deserve to own any sort of animal at all. And you need to get to the authorities about that.

    rygdav OP 7d ago ⚫ Top 1% Commenter I feel bad for the new puppy, but there was a tiny bit of relief that this should mean they won't ask me for her back. I've been a little scared of that, but they'd have to fight me. I took her to the vet immediately for checkup/shots and a few weeks later for a spay, so I have vet records and the emails where they said I could keep her.
