What does your mind conjure when you think of a David Lynch production? Is it the dream-like atmosphere, the stilted dialogue between quirky characters, the never-ending references to his favorite movie, The Wizard of Oz? Personally, I think of long, dark shots of lonely, twisting roads illuminated by headlights, Americana motifs, and gorgeous scenes of heart-wrenching live performances by soulful musicians. Every Lynch production is indeed unique, but they are each filled with his trademarks quirks and fixations.

David Lynch is certainly no underground, indie director, but not everyone has seen his movies. Certainly, many don't have the attention span. But everyone who has watched a TV show within the last thirty years has experienced the effects of his influence. Shows like Lost, True Detective, and Apple TV's Severance would not exist if it weren't for his cinematic experimentation.
