It is also quite difficult on dogs when their names are changed. When adopting an older dog, it is recommended to keep their name or change it to something that sounds really similar — such as, Larry to Gary. Not much sounds like Charlie, though. Perhaps Gnarly?

So many of the suggestions here are way too cute! The sister could really just learn to the relax and lean into the silly family lore.

While it is impossible for someone to lay claim to a name, most families have an unspoken rule that two individuals should not share the same first name unless the younger one is intentionally named after the older one. And in this case, the younger one is often dubbed, "Junior," or referred to as their middle name. Of course, in the end, everyone has free will, and some parents cannot help but give their child the same name as their cousin, which leads to a great deal of confusion at family functions.
In our story today, a woman names her newborn "Charlie," a name shared by her sister's golden retriever, which has been in the family for years. Although she could have chosen any other name, she instead demands that her sister change her pup's name so that no one will get confused — as if anyone will have trouble deciphering which Charlie needs a diaper change and which one needs to be taken on a walk.
