'Stupid question: Are cats really that smart?'

So I have been a dog person all my life, never lived with a cat and only seen them at other people's houses minding their own business.
  • 03
I just came home from visiting my grandma who lives alone with her cat. I've seen and petted the cat a few times before but never really thought much about it. Today I
  • 04
stayed a bit longer than usual and we got some dinner to eat together.

When her cat came over we started talking about her. She is a completely black Bombay with golden eyes that just decided to live with my grandma. She used to be
  • 06
owned by the neighbors but decided it was nicer to live with my grandma by just sneaking into the house and making it its own. When the neighbors
  • 07
moved they asked my grandmother if she would like to have the cat stay with her, so she just adopted her.

Now I have never seen a cat following orders or understanding what a person is saying, but this cat was just doing everything my grandma told her to do (taking her time though). When we
  • 09
were talking, this cat seemed like it was trying everything to be part of the conversation. I ended
  • 10
up rubbing her back but when I pulled my hand away I got a quick s p commanding me to continue, this happened a few times before I ignored her sl g and stopped petting. After

that my grandma proudly showed me a few more commands that the cat would follow.
  • 12
Honestly I was kind of baffled by how smart that cat was. Before this I've only seen a few cats that were lazing around ignoring everything around them, and I've never really interacted with one.
  • 13
Sorry for this stupid story but I'm just feeling happy that my grandma who has trouble living alone (my grandpa passed last year) has a buddy around like that, and I wanted to share this with someone.

But I'm also genuinely wondering if other cats are like that. She just seemed so genuine and aware of the situation.

Ranos131 Yes cats really are that smart. The problem is they don't act like dogs so people think they are stupid. Cats understand us just as well as dogs do.

The difference is that dogs want to please us so will do what we say while cats want us to please them so will only do what we say if there's something in it for them.

Oh yes, some cats are absolutely that smart! Not all of them, but even the darling dumb ones will learn to communicate with humans by meowing.

Feral adult cats don't meow much except when talking to their kittens. The most meowing is for humans, and it was cute watching my initially feral kitten figure out meowing to communicate.

Some cats will learn tricks. The ones who do usually like human interaction a lot and also really like treats. My sweet baby with maybe a singular brain cell doesn't like most treats so I never taught her anything

except to come when I call. I used to clicker train my smart cat, though. Just simple stuff like go here, sit down, jump here, and spin in a circle.

we got a cat because I didn't think I could love a cat as much as a dog lol. Stupid me. I had my calico trained to sit and shake her paw in a day and she taught HERSELF how to flush the toilet! 5 years and 4 cats later,

I've learned they are crazy smart, but they definitely do what they want!
