When my brother first came to me raving about this incredible game he'd heard of called Dungeons & Dragons, I had absolutely no idea what he was talking about. It was the late 80s, and this was the kind of thing you only learned about through whispers—he heard it from a friend, who heard it from a friend, who knew someone who actually played it. Before I could even ask what the game was, he pulled out the thickest binder I had ever seen and handed it to me. It was The Monstrous Compendium, Vol. 1—144 glorious pages packed with every mythical beast I had ever imagined, plus a ton I'd never even heard of. From that moment, I was hooked. Well, we were both hooked.

Our only problem? Finding a group of friends who were as fascinated by this bizarre, dice-rolling, monster-slaying, dungeon-crawling world as we were.
