Patient person spends 1 year befriending stray friendly feline, proving that some cats just need a little time to fall in love: ‘I’m so glad I took the time to allow him to come around on his own terms’

Good meowrning to all you pawrents out there. One of the first lessons you probably learned from your cats was patience. Cats are not like dogs, they do not live to please. If they don't want to be pet, they will actively walk away from you. If they want their alone time, they will not come when you call them (except for some treats, maybe). Cats take longer than other animals to warm up to hoomans sometimes, and that's purrfectly. But when a cat chooses you, it really chooses you. 

One woman found a beautiful black cat wandering around her property, and being an animal lover, she couldn't just let the poor kitty be alone in the winter. She started by building him a small house outside and, over the course of a year, slowly but surely gained his trust and affection. He eventually opened up to her and now he follows her everywhere! This video is the purrfect lesson about cat consent, and it's also pawsitively wholesome. Watch the whole thing below!

  • She has much more patience that we do. Normally we just squat on the ground and go pspspspspspsps until they come to us. If that doesn't work, we break out the good stuff (treats). No matter what, though, we end up on the ground looking like a crazy purrson. It's called method acting, and it has worked for us so far, so you might want to give it a try.

  • Now all that's left is to bring him inside, dress up for Halloween, and start a tradition called “Tuna Tuesdays," where he gets a can of tuna every Tuesday just because. He told us that this is what he wants. You should believe us, we're expurrts at knowing what cats want.

    alexmag2 Congrats! I would highly recommend you bring him in. I cared for a black cat too and he was such a sweetie but I was in college housing and already had a cat so I couldn't take him, but he had lived outside apparently for at least 5 years. One day I came home to find him crying and severely injured, likely by another animal. He didn't make it. Even if it takes time, I would highly recommend slowly transitioning him to indoors, a catio would help too.
