"AITA for informing the higher ups of misconduct in the workplace?"

I(m40) work as a security guard in my local area. A few months back I worked at the site for an AVIS car rental site. It was a 24/7 site that always had 2 guards (one at front desk, one patrolling the parking lot) all the time. I work the late shift (4pm-12midnight, Fri-Mon) with the 2nd in command for the Site, we'll call her Sara.

Sara was the one who was ranked just below our initial Boss. She was a real stickler for the rules, which is fine, I always followed the rules and regulations so there were issues there. My issue is that iterally EVERYDAY she would show up to work 30 mins late. I worked there for a 9 months and EVERYDAY she was 30 mins late.

Also everyday, I would take my mandatory 30 min lunch/dinner break. Any time I would go to clock out for my break even a minute earlier, Sarah would notice and tell me it isn't time yet, but there were times when she would take her 30 min break, but not come back for a whole hour, sometimes longer.

The other security officers who work there have worked with her and are rather irritated at her constantly lateness, and they have ALL gone to the boss about her and all he has ever done is act surprised, tell them he'll talk to her, but nothing else happens.

Jump towards the end of my time there. On Friday, 2 hours before I'm suppose to go in for work my boss suddenly texts me saying to not come into work. When I went to ask him what the reasoning was for it, he just asked me to contact the district manager. I was unable

transferred. I still do not know what had happened to cause it but I ended up talking to the district Manager and found a different location to work. But while I was talking to the District Manager, I had informed him of Sara coming in late everyday, or taking hour long breaks instead of the mandatory 30mins. He asked me if

mandatory 30mins. He asked me if I had spoken to the Boss of this and told him the entire staff has made the boss aware of her tardiness and yet nothing has been said to her or done to change it. He thanked me for my feedback and said he'll be sure to investigate. So....

AITA for telling the District Manager about the Boss not doing anything to fix the tardiness issue with his 2nd in command?

Everyone in the comments took this man's side.

NTA. It sounds like you gave Sara multiple chances to fix her behavior, and the other security officers also went to the boss with their concerns.

    Sometimes snitches don't get stitches.

If nothing was being done and it was affecting the job environment, you were right to escalate the issue. The fact that the district manager was thankful for your feedback shows that they took your concerns seriously.

If your boss wasn't handling. the issue, you did what you had to do to ensure the workplace was being run properly. You shouldn't have to tolerate constant lateness or unfair treatment, especially when it's impacting your work and the team as a whole.

NTA. It affects you because she is not there to do her part, which puts you in the position of trying to cover two roles simultaneously until she arrives. This is a burden on anyone who is scheduled with her, so you just saved the person who will be taking your place with her.
  • 16
Also, I love the karma in the fact that she's such a stickler for break times yet she's always tardy. What goes. around, comes around!
  • 17
AITA? More on AIT-I'll be here on time! If Sara's clock was a car, it'd be a lemon constantly late and leaving everyone stranded.
  • 18
NTA you were just reporting what everyone else was already complaining about and nothing was being done.
  • 19
NTA, Sara can find somewhere else to work. If she can't be on time, she isn't entitled to remain employed.

    Someone caught a stray here...

ETA: I almost half expected her to come crying with some bulls "time blindness accommodation" excuse tbh. Anyone who thinks they deserve accommodation because they can't get themselves to work on time are just wrong.
