Employee cancels shift due to family emergency, manager rejects request and writes him up despite following protocol: 'That is really not a legitimate excuse'

Employees are not the only folks who should have to follow protocol. Rules cannot be taken seriously if they do not apply to everyone within an institution. That's the whole purpose of having a contract in the first place!

Unfortunately, we all know that there are far too many managers out there who are too full of themselves to even notice when they are not honoring their end of the bargain. They could be too overwhelmed with their own duties to see it, or they could be flexing whatever false sense of authority they feel the need to project. Regardless, when this happens, employees need to remember the rules and, like their bosses would if the roles were reversed, they need to reinforce said rules if necessary.

Here, we have a gas station employee who followed protocol by notifying his manager more than four hours in advance that he would need to cancel his shift due to a family emergency. For some reason, this lady had the audacity to try and tell her employee that he was in the wrong and needed to be written up as a result of his action. She also wanted to leave him with the responsibility of finding someone else to cover his shift even though it was technically not last-minute and he did not need to do so. She even went so far as to try to pressure this employee to come in on a day he previously said was not available instead, but thankfully, he stood his ground.
