  • "Coworker about to get fired, gets promoted instead, company culture f’d"

Some backstory to this, I worked in a very small department of a large private club. We were the outdoors activity department, responsible for guiding guests on various outdoorsy things, the most popular of which being the water sports boat. I had a coworker (Jim, we'll call him) who was a bit of a narcissist, and who would constantly take advantage of things. Our supervisor at the time (bob) hated Jim, and Jim hated bob.
  • One abnormally slow day, Jim decided to remain clocked in and take his mountain bike out on the local trails. As luck would have it, Jim ran into bob out there. After the interaction, Jim frantically ran to clock out on his phone. When he returned to work, however, bob was waiting for Jim with Jim's time card pulled up. "I know you were clocked in out there" said bob, "I'm telling the director (rob) and you're probably getting fired for wage theft."

  • Low and behold, Jim was back at work the next day, and didn't get fired. His hatred for Bob was taken to a new level. "I'm going to take everything I can from this company," Jim told me. I witnessed Jim fill his car up from our company fuel, steal loads of different items, and smoke spliffs on the clock for weeks. Bob kept sneaking around, trying to catch Jim in the act again, but he
  • couldn't. Eventually Jim went to HR, cried and said Bob was unfairly trying to get him fired for no reason other than disliking him. Unfortunately, Bob also had a poor relationship with Rob, the director, and this put bob on thin ice.
  • Fast forward to the next summer and we are running boat excursions. Jim is loving work without bob breathing down his neck and is doing everything he can to bend the rules. On a busy weekend, there happened to not be a boat tour scheduled. Jim invited his friends out onto the work boat. His friends brought booze and even tipped Jim for taking them out. However, while on the dock with his huge crew Jim ran into an ex employee who was also a friend of Bob's. The ex

  • Rob decided it was time to fire Jim, and told myself and the rest of the team that Jim was getting canned. Well, as it turns out, after getting told he was fired Jim found some clause on the state DOL's website stating "you cannot be fired to be made an example of." Jim went to HR with this, and claimed that x y and z other coworkers all have friends on the boat, so it is illegal to fire him for that. He claimed that even Bob the supervisor took his own friends out on the work boat.

  • HR decided to side with Jim, and demanded that Jim not be fired. This resulted in a huge fight between Bob (supervisor) and rob (director), ultimately ending in Bob getting fired. Without a supervisor in the department, Rob eventually promoted Jim for the role in an attempt to give him more responsibility and "help him mature."

  • I am no longer with this company as this whole scenario showed me how truly disfuncional the entire department was, and sadly, how narcissists usually end up winning.
