'Well played!': Guy crashes a car he's test driving due to spongy brakes, shady dealership tries to finagle extra cash, gets license revoked instead

Car shopping can be very stressful. You have to know what you want, do a lot of research on what you want, make sure the dealership you're shopping at is trustworthy, have insurance, the funds, mental strength, etc. It's exhausting. So when something gets added into the shopping around processes, like a car crash, you can imagine how much more stressful it gets. 

 

In this situation, the man car shopping found himself at a shady dealership. He did't realize this, however, until after the test drive with a shoddy car. During this drive, there was a minor accident. However, he talked to his insurance and was able to figure everything out. The dealership went after him!

  • The dealership said he had to pay the price of the car, which they hiked up immensely, or they would sue him! This would be alarming if the man hadn't already talked to his insurance about it. So he simply refused and responded that he is going to follow the words of his insurance company, and not some shady dealership. You know what they did? Nothing. They never responded and nothing ever happened. Last time he checked, they got their license revoked. Lol If you're going to play dirty, expect dirty results!

    "Crooked second hand car dealer"

    A number of years ago I was test driving a used sports car. I got about 1 block from the dealership and got into an accident. Partially my fault. The brakes were spongy and the stop ended up with the front end of the car sticking into an intersection by about 2 feet. It

    So, I make a police report and insurance report. Insurance company says not to worry. A couple months later I get a letter from the dealership saying I owe the price of the car and if I don't pay they're going to sue.

    But I had already talked to the insurance company. Once I informed the dealership I already talked to the insurance company and knew the payout was more than the sales price of the car. Never heard from them again

    I then contacted the government office that licenses car dealers and told them what happened. They ended up losing their licence

    Adorable-Cut-4711 Side track: I'm from Sweden and for me it seems wild to need a license to sell used cars. The only resemblance of something similar we have are dealers license plates, where a car dealer can pay a relatively high road tax and insurance for a set of plates that covers any car that is otherwise not taxed and/or insured, just so a dealer don't have to tax and insure all cars in their lot but just put those plates when someone wants to test drive.

    (There are some special cases where you need some sort of permit/license, like IIRC handling food and also you need a license to do electrical installations/repairs, work with refrigerants that may harm the environment and whatnot).

    revengeful_cargo OP This was in Canada. They have dealer plates there too. Any car dealership, new or used, has to be licensed by a provincial authority. I found that out in the 1970s. Just as everything was changing from miles to kilometers I bought a used car. The dealer told me the odometer was in km and it turned out to be miles.

    The dealership wouldn't off an refund and I got a call from the provincial authority asking me to file a written complaint because they had been pushing to put the dealership out of business. I didn't because I had worked there as a lot rat when I was in school and didn't want to put all my friends out of work.
