"AITA for Refusing to Let My Neighbor’s Kids Use My Pool After They Kept Ignoring My Rules?"

When I bought my house last year, one of the things I was most excited about was the pool. I take care of it, I pay for the upkeep, and now that summer's here, I've been. using it almost every day.

A few weeks ago, my neighbor Karen asked if her kids (8, 10, and 12) could use my pool since they don't have one. I wasn't thrilled about the idea, but I agreed as long as
  • 04
they followed a few simple rules ask before coming over, have an adult present, and don't trash the pool or try to sneak in when I'm not home.
  • 05
At first, it was fine. The kids would swim, have fun, and leave. But then, little things started happening. I caught them in my backyard without permission. One day, I came
  • 06
home from work and found them swimming alone, no adults in sight. Another time, they were throwing food into the pool. I brought it up to Karen, and she just brushed it
  • 07
off, saying, Oh, they just got excited. She promised it wouldn't happen again. It did. The final straw was last Saturday. I woke up early, stepped outside, and there
  • 08
they were in my pool again, completely unsupervised. That was it. I told them to get out and went straight to Karen's house. I told her her kids were no longer allowed in my pool.
  • 09
She flipped out, calling me dramatic and selfish because it's just a pool, and they're just kids having fun. But I don't care. It's my property, my responsibility, and I gave them more than enough chances. If
  • 10
I can't trust them to respect my rules, why should I keep letting them in? Now some neighbors think I'm being harsh, but honestly,
  • 11
how many chances was I supposed to give? Am I really the bad guy for not wanting to deal with this anymore? AITA?

pupsymomma NTA - time to put a lock on the gate and install cameras along with a sign saying no trespassing or private property to cover yourself in case something does happen.
  • 14
Quick-Store2989 NOPE.....one of those kids get hurt or drowned you would be legally liable 100% make no mistake. I wouldn't let them swim even with adult supervision that wasn't you.
  • 15
Fantastic_Mechanic73 NTA your pool, your property, your rules. Your neighbors are entitled jerks that need a clear dose of reality. She can take them to the YMCA if they need to go swimming that badly

princesspurrito36 Get no trespassing signs and likely a camera. They won't stop. Nta

Prior Pomegranate960 Tell them your insurance policy prohibits unsupervised minors.

AlternativeSort7253 NTA basic liability. They have pool alarms also that will set up a crazy loud siren if the surface of the pool is disturbed while on. Might be a good investment.
  • 19
You need to have a locked gate around the entire pool, depending on where you live that may be law. If anything goes wrong with the kids in that pool she will sue without a thought so you should check. Good luck.

Suitable-Park 184 I would text you neighbor. Make sure you have a documented record showing her kids are not allowed to use your pool. Kids swimming unsupervised is a huge risk.

Here_IGuess ΝΤΑ You shouldn't have said yes in the first place. You don't need to be legally responsible (& you will be) for anything dangerous that happens to these other people while they're on your property.
