'I felt sorry for his son's future': Rich friend turns favor into free labor, bossing his friend and making him take orders from his entitled kid

  • "Friend asked to mentor his kid's project with my kid, then expect deliver project in one month"

"His son asked me to give him the code, so he can hire a team"
  • haisergeant OP Well, to give more context, he earned couple of millions last year, because he is owner of a hedge fund. His son is studying at private school.
  • I'm software engineer, much less than that, my son is in public school.. It's quite quick to see the reality of a person in one month..
  • Back to late Jan, my friend X (now he is ex-friend lol) asked whether my kid want to join a website project with his kid. He want me to be project's mentor, along with him and other parents. He said

  • his kid spent around 70 hours on Wix but got lots of issues. I am with engineering background, taught my kid about coding for fun. My kid want to learn more
  • about website setup, not like javascript, python he learnt before, so we joined.
  • So I setup Slack, Trello, JIRA to manage project properly. From the first day, his kid (named: Xs) create a ticket on JIRA (Fix bugs on the website), without description. I spent a lot of time to teach the team (5 kids

  • including my kid) to do the work correctly, by inputing details, description on the ticket, UI, design as well, more clear to speed up the process.
  • After first week in Feb, tickets not update, a lazy screenshot captured on Wix and put on ticket with no description. I again open session to train the team why this ticket was not able to
  • develop etc... At the same time I setup environment, Firebase authentication, firestore, DB, storage. Then setup landing page for the site, using NextJS. My kid
  • also worked on building mockup using html, css, javascript. Then I port that to NextJS. In the weekly meeting in first week, my friend X asked when I can deliver the
  • website to him (??!). Something not right here. I told him let the kids study step by step, estimate and then we can got the timeline.
  • Second week in Feb, tickets still not update and not clear. My kid asked Xs "hey can you add more detail on ticket, we can't understand, how we can develop?". Xs said "I'm busy with homework", then attached bunch of screenshots to lots of tickets,
  • assign to me and my kid, told us one week to complete. I said "No, that's not how software development work, you give tickets, check tickets clear, my kid estimate, then we identify the timeline". He seemed to understand....
  • Third week in Feb, tickets got update with 1-2 lines.. Xs said "sorry I got writing contest", Xs did spent 1-2 hours to create Google form to send to client. At this time I helped my kid to setup like 50-60% of the work. My
  • friend X called me to ask whether we deliver in 2 weeks. I asked "Where the timeline of 2 weeks coming from?". He responded "Because I promise to the client". I said "then tell your kid to remove some features not important in this release." His kid
  • after 1-2 days coming back with update screenshot. The difference with his new screenshot and previous screenshot was some lines were removed...
  • Fourth week in Feb, Xs continued "sorry I got cadet". I was thinking ". X continue to ask when project can deliver. When I asked X, "hey I'm mentor, I help my kid,
  • not the coder to finish whole project, my kid also needs time to learn." X responded: "you can do whole thing and your son learnt later"
  • Wow, to this point I point out he invited my son just for me to do the whole work, not a mentor. I said in weekly meeting "You're not professional when expecting mentor to do whole work, you don't care about the learning process at all".
  • Then: X blocked me, unfriend me on social network, remove me from meeting group. Xs told the client that the IT team caused delay, can't deliver project in one month etc.
  • I think that's enough, I deleted JIRA board, Slack workspace, github code, vercel deployment, firebase project etc...
  • Then his son Xs asked me to give him the code, so he can hire other team with $$$ to deliver in 1 week....
  • I felt sorry for his son's future.
  • Spirited-Rabbit6644 Wow this X friend of your sound so unethical and so unprofessional I feel sorry for his child and pray that his child never turns out to be like his father at least professionally
