When a teacher refers to the "old-fashioned way," they might want to be a bit more specific.

While we respect that there can be a ton of classroom disruptions in the digital age, computers are a necessary part of note-taking in this time. It's quicker to take notes on them compared to handwritten annotations, and as long as students aren't distracted by social media, things should be fine. Obviously, enforcing that kind of focus is easier said than done, but at the end of the day, it's their loss if they miss an important point that might end up on a later assessment.

  • This kid was accused of typing too loudly in class, and while the author of the story does concede that the kid was a tiny bit distracting, he probably could have been pulled aside by the teacher rather than reprimanded in front of the entire class. He was told that he could no longer bring his laptop to class anymore (a policy that was later debunked by the school principal) and that the kid would have to take notes the “old-fashioned” way from now on.     I think he was allowed to bring his laptop back, but simply because the teacher didn't have the right to restrict it in the first place. He never had a problem taking notes in that class for the rest of the year...
