Look, we get that this cat was not “his” to begin with, that it was his mom's, but that doesn't justify neglecting her for years. If he didn't want her, he should not have taken her, or he should have rehomed her. This was unacceptable. We're so thankful she's in better hands now.

This is very true. Cats can live to a very old and happy age, as long as they are in a loving, happy environment. The fact that she has lived this long while being neglected just shows how resilient and full of life she is. We wish you both many happy years together.
