There are two kinds of people in this world: those that bake well and those that should not even try. It's just not worth it. Sure, there will always be nice people among your friends and family who will pretend that as long as it tastes good, nothing else matters. 

The truth of the matter is that these people are lying to you. The aesthetic of cakes simply does matter. A tasty cake can be completely ruined by an aesthetic monstrosity, whereas an average-tasting cake can be forgiven if it looks beautiful. I'm not saying this is how it should be, but folks, this is how it is. If you cannot bake an aesthetically pleasing cake, just be like me and give up.
