'Sounds like you need to rehome the boyfriend': Sleepless boyfriend wants to rehome grieving cat who cries all night; girlfriend stands up for her fluffy rescue by calling him out

Hey there, feline friends (and hooman friends). We know that we write a lot about heartwarming, seamless rescue stories where the rescued feline immediately falls in love with their new pawrents and everything is sunshine and rainbows. However, that's not always the case. A lot of cats remember their past, especially if it was purrticularly emeowtional, like the one in this thread below. It was abandoned by its previous owners who just moved away and left it behind, but luckily, a couple came and took her in with all the love in their hearts.

However, this cat missed its previous family, and began crying at night. All night. After months of the cat still grieving, the boyfriend finally got fed up. He insisted on rehoming the cat, saying it's not fair for them to keep losing sleep over a cat. The girlfriend, however, stood up for her fluffy rescue and only asked for a little bit of compassion.   • We love vocal cats. We love having full conversations with them, but, it is a double-edged sword. A needy and vocal cat can really test your patience to the limit. But, this is also a good lesson in compassion. The kitty just needs some reassurance that it will continue to be loved.

    play with him but she hates being chased. I've considered feliway or melatonin but I've recently heard of cats getting really sick from the feliways.

    The weird thing is he pretty much only does it when my boyfriend's home. He does it when it's close to food time of course but most of the time he's silent and calm when it's just me. He will cry a little bit but settle down after a few minutes.

    I just ignore him when he does it, but my boyfriend will yell at him and tell him to stop. I told him to stop doing that because it still rewards the behaviour in a way, but he's really stressed that we are bothering our neighbors in the apartment and can't keep letting him do that.     the frustration I have lost so much sleep over him and get stressed when he's doing it because I'm worried about the neighbors, but yelling at him is even more obnoxious and is potentially prolonging the behaviour. I never hear any noise from our neighbors units

    We took him to the vet when we first brought him home and the vet said he is in great health, neutered etc. He didn't do any bl d tests though it was just a physical exam.

  • Rescue shelters are overrun as it is. This cat just needs time. It had a whole life before them that it was forced to give up, and that sort of healing doesn't happen overnight.

    The reason he's calling out is because he's looking for his people that he lost. He's calling out for his family, and this is actually really common behavior. He isn't sick, he's grieving. The only thing that's going to fix it is time, love, and letting this cat know you're there and you're not going away.

    I have a one-eyed cat who "gets lost" all the time. ...He goes in the shower and then forgets how to get out of the shower curtain. So he starts screaming to try to find us. Once one of us says his name, or we go get him, or one of the other cats goes into the room to get him, he's totally fine.
