Welcome back ladies and gentlemen. Gwen Stefani said it best with her 1995 hit song, Just a Girl while she was in the band No Doubt. The song is about how no one takes her seriously as a woman, how she's treated like she's stupid, or weak, or dependent on men for everything. She tries to separate herself from these notions, and tells us through singing that she's a fully functional, capable, independent adult who doesn't need supervision, stares with eyes, or people to pity her for being a girl. The phrase has blown up on the internet, but it's depicting just that that she's trying to write and sing against. In memes and in online forums, "just a girl" is a phrase that now means, "I'm stupid and can't do anything in this world for myself." For example, it could say "I'm just a girl," and the photo is of a woman trying to pay for a coffee with lipstick. But it's nonetheless funny. 

For every woman who is fighting against the patriarchy, there are a million women just flowing in the same current of misogyny as any other man. But let's not focus on the negative. It's better and easier to laugh at what we enjoy, to sometimes take a step back into being helped. Even if you're a strong and independent woman, it doesn't mean that you can't laugh at yourself sometimes.
