I've known people to react badly after receiving no gifts on their birthday after telling everyone not to get them anything. Just be honest! Then when others earnestly plead for nothing on their birthday because they already own too many things, they still end up with a mini-haul of extra junk they specifically didn't ask for.

It's pretty clear that our protagonist isn't well-versed in potlucking rules. However, if the host was going to act so catty about it, she could have said something like: “Hey, it's okay if you don't cook. Can you manage to bring some cookies or a drink?” Seriously, people can communicate like adults instead of acting passive-aggressive.

Hostess humiliates friend for not bringing a dish to the potluck despite giving approval over text: "She put me on blast in front of people for something I didn't even do wrong"
There was a point in my early twenties where I was either hosting or attending a potluck every single weekend. For a big group of young adults, it was a great way to socialize without spending too much money. It was also a great opportunity to share your favorite dishes. My go-to was always a big, herby couscous salad with tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, sliced cashews, and raisins. If I didn't have time to prepare my salad – even though it was really easy to make on purpose – I loved stopping by my favorite bakery to bring a dessert to share.
In our story today, a young woman gets the host's okay to not bring a dish to the potluck. However, she gets called out in front of everyone for showing up empty handed. While I agree with netizens' assessments that not bringing anything at all to a potluck is a bit of a faux pas, the host was totally out of line putting her on the spot like that!
