This is Petra. I adopted her at 7 months old from a local shelter. I knew she wasn't spayed yet and they gave me a voucher for her spay, but I could never have expected what happened.

About a week after I adopted her I noticed that she was extremely fat. She kept getting fatter and I went, is she pregnant? I reached out to a local vet school and asked if they would ultrasound her (for free) and they said yes!!! They soon confirmed that she was going to have at least three kittens.

I reached out to the rescue I got her from and said hey, what the h I? The gal who did her intake exam said in 20+ years of rescue she's NEVER missed a pregnancy.

At this point she was at roughly six weeks, far too late for a spay abort in my opinion, so I offered to "foster" mama and babies until the kittens could be adopted out. The rescue helped me with food, which was a lifesaver.

She had the kittens and then I immediately found out she had worms, so we went to an urgent care and got her some meds. It was an unfortunate situation for her to have kittens and worms at 7 months old, and she's extremely tiny as an adult so I suspect she got stunted, but she had three healthy kittens and that was a very fun couple of months!!!!

Once I have a bigger place I want to foster more pregnant mamas. However having two cats, three kittens and a puppy in a one bedroom apartment was A LOT. enjoy photos of my littl family. of voids!!

isabellegc You're amazing! I'm very surprised that the shelter is adopting out cats without getting them fixed first... even with a free voucher, lots of people won't bother. Seems irresponsible. Glad they're helping you out with food at least.

AuthenticElle OP That's the thing, it wasn't even a free voucher! They would refund me $50. This wasn't even a small rescue, it was the city shelter. Truly bewildering. They should have spayed and wormed her, but I'm glad they didn't. The deworming medications can cause birth defects in kittens, so if they had dewormed but not spayed her, it could've caused issues :( it all worked out fine in the end! They were just grateful that I was willing to keep Mom and foster babies. A lot of people would
