  • 02
This little kitten just randomly showed up on my front porch 2 days ago. It seems to be by itself and decided it now lives on my front porch.

I'm not sure how old it is but it seems very small. I have been giving it kitten food and water since it showed up. Any suggestions on what I should do?

It runs away from but has been getting closer when I give it food. Should I trap it and take to the vet? I'm happy to take him/her in.

I've only had dogs and never had a cat, so this is new to me. I attached some pictures for reference. Thanks everyone!

Suspicious_Pain4568 • 2d ago Buy wet food or a piece of chicken, sit down, get comfortable and don't move a muscle. Don't stare at it, look occasionally, and when you do, blink very slowly once or twice, that's how cats say "hey, I like you!" The key is to look rather uninterested, like you're just hanging out.
  • 16
Once it comes close enough for you to touch him, wait for him to get comfortable before you move. At some point it'll get close enough for you to grab it by the skin behind the head and safely bring it in. Best of luck and congratulations on your new family member :) 298 ○ Reply ...

This is exactly how I got my cat before a major snowstorm hit a few months ago. I got this picture after first got him in my car. He wouldn't have made it through that night with the temps. I'm not sure if it matters too much but I made sure to touch the food vs. pour it to leave my scent on it? I don't know if I read that

somewhere or what but I've done that for years since I've been rescuing cats. Randy Bo-Bandy is currently laying on my side as I'm typing this and approves of this message. Congrats on your new void.

KBTR1066 • 1d ago This is the right answer. And OP, I know you're thinking "Grab it by the skin behind the neck?!", but yeah, do exactly that. At this size they're so tiny that it really won't bother them at all, they'll just kinda dangle there with their limbs all spread out. This is actually how their mama cat would carry them around so it's all good.
  • 21
FYI, don't just pinch it by a tiny little bit of skin of something, just get a good handful of skin in a closed fist and lift. I mean of course if it's super sweet and just lets you pick it up, then cool. But often times with nervous little kittens they're really skittish and will run off at the slightest provocation. + 91 ◇ Reply ...

NotViolentJustSmart • 1d ago Scruffing a kitten short circuits their fight/flight response so even if you can pick the kitten up, getting a gentle but firm hold on the neck scruff will help keep them calm and chill.
  • 23
RainaElf 20h ago if they have a scruff. one cat I had didn't have a scruff to speak of, and the one I have now has no neck and is basically also scruffless. 8 23 Reply NotViolentJustSmart • 15h ago OMG THEY'RE EVOLVING, WE'RE DOOOOOOOOMED!!!1!

Historical-Gap-7084 • 1d ago Finally an actual serious answer. Although, if OP cannot grab the kitten, I would definitely ask a local rescue to borrow a trap so you can take it to the vet immediate to get it fixed and vaccinated.
  • 25
Make sure to cover the trap with a blanket or towel to disguise it after setting food in it, and try not to let the kitten see you doing it, or they'll always associate traps with bad things.

Wonderful_Device312 • 21h ago To add onto this - just sit down and read a book near them. It's easier than acting uninterested and being patient.

catsnotabigdeal OP • 1d ago Thanks everyone! Took the kitty to the vet and he is now on medicine for an eye infection and parasites. He is cozy and isolating in another room until it's safe for my dogs to be around him.

OneMorePenguin • 12h ago Oh so happy he is doing well and it seems like you are going to adopt him! Cats are different from dogs and provide different form of benefits than dogs do. Cats generally like more contact and are more sensitive to the emotional state of their humans. They can also be little shs, too :-). Please let us know how he is doing and what name you've chosen for him. He's so friendly and he really did chose well. Thank you for helping him.

raezin • 16h ago Aww, he picked you, OP! You're about to get SO much love. I know it's supposedly a stereotype, but male black cats can show an almost dog-like sweetness and eagerness to please. And he has such a model for sweetness in his older canine siblings, to boot!
