Corporate logic never fails to amaze, especially when it's deployed with the vision of a bat navigating a blackout. Take the brain trust at a carpet-cleaning company: they had a golden goose, more accurately, a cash cow working the phones, upselling everything short of the office potted plants. Nobody booked a $99 single-room clean without being gently "reminded" that their drapes, couch cushions, and emotional baggage could all gleam for just a few hundred bucks more. Profits soared. Franchise owners probably developed repetitive strain injuries from patting themselves on the back.

But corporate America loves nothing if not an unforced error. After a medical setback landed the Upsell Maestro in the office, he turned scheduling into a competitive sport, scooping up all the sales before cleaners could even dream of their own commissions. Record margins became the new normal, until PTO collided with immune compromise, and suddenly the cash cow was unceremoniously sent out to pasture, fired for being too responsible about his health.
