I feel like that's such a reasonable punishment for selling the dress without her permission. She basically just has to take accountability for her actions.

Okay, so it seems like it was pretty unclear whether or not our protagonist was lending the dress or giving it away. Either way, the teen should have absolutely asked first.

16-year-old grounded after selling 37-year-old stepmother's old prom dress without her permission to afford new earbuds after destroying old pair in washing machine: "My husband thinks I'm being too harsh"
Fashion is cyclical. It might be hard to believe that the trends of your teenage years that make you cringe would ever come back around, but they always do. That's why it's incredibly important to keep a selection of your best clothes – even if they go "out of style" for a bit – for your progeny. My mom had the most amazing collection of lowrise, flare pants and crop tops from the early 2000s that I wasn't interested in as a teenager (high-waisted skinny jeans were all the rage at the time). So, she gave it all away, and I don't think I'll ever be able to forgive her.
In our story today, a stepmom lends her old prom dress to her teenage stepdaughter. Maybe mom wasn't clear enough about the fact that it was a loan, because when she found the teen's new pair of expensive earbuds and she found out where she got the money for them, she wasn't very happy with the answer.
