THE STORY TOLD BY OP:
About seven months ago, we fished a smol white cat out of a car engine at work. She came out screaming but otherwise okay. Since it was kitten season and there was nowhere else for her to go, she landed in our spare room—and has since become a foster fail.
Then, on Monday, my boss came up to me and said he thought he heard meowing in the parking garage downstairs. I went down, and the car wash guys told me they had seen something climb out of an SUV and run under a red Polo. We looked under all the cars but couldn’t see or hear anything—until I tried meowing. (Our first girl is a talker, so I figured it was worth a shot.) The car wash guys thought I was nuts, but lo and behold, the red Polo meowed back.
I crawled under it and spotted a tiny face hiding in the engine area. We called the owner of the car, a friend and lovely lady. Her first concern was that one of her own cats had snuck in. She came down with a colleague and popped the hood. Inside was a dirty, five- or six-week-old kitten, tucked beside the radiator. I reached in and gently pulled him out. He came out meowing his head off—tiny, exhausted, and absolutely adorable.

CONTINUED:
I made a little kangaroo pouch from my jersey, and he immediately curled up and fell asleep, tucking his head in. I told my boss I was heading to the vet and called my boyfriend, who said, “We’re not keeping this one.” Off we went. The vet said he was a boy, slightly underweight, with a gunky eye, but otherwise in good health. He still loved the pouch. I brought him home, set him up in the spare room with a little bed, a fluffy blanket, a toy, and some mousse—which he devoured—and went back to work.
Later, the car owner messaged me. Her landlady, who has two cats and had been thinking about adopting a third, was interested. She works from home, has a spacious house, and wanted a companion for her younger cat. She instantly fell in love. Since the kitten was safe to be around vaccinated cats, she picked him up right away. She set him up with his own room, food, toys, and a cozy basket.
That was a week ago. His name is Lando. He’s already playing, eating like a champ, and being the lovable little lap cat we knew he was from day one. He sleeps in his new mom’s bed and follows her around like he was always meant to be there. He chose that car. He climbed into that engine. And he found his perfect family.
