Yesterday my wife and I were at the vet to get one of our community cats his rabies vaccine and flea meds. He's a very laidback old guy, with TNR sometime in his past, who hangs out on our block.

We were still in the waiting room when a young guy came through the door carrying a box. He was a construction worker from a site nearby, and the entire work crew were in emotional pieces after finding

schedule was already backed due to an earlier emergency and there was no guarantee anyone could see him for hours. He looked at a loss as to what to do next.

So we stepped in and volunteered to cover the appointment with our own and hold the kittens (which he was willing to take home) until he got off work. We're retired, which means we have only ourselves to answer to.

Quick exchange of numbers and off he went. Sadly, the vet soon determined that the little void kitten couldn't be saved, but the x-rays for the tortie showed all bones intact. He sent us

obviously she was already gaining strength. When her new owner arrived that evening, I was torn handing her over, but any anxiety I felt was quickly allayed. He had cats already, he was sooo gentle with the little tortie, and there was a room he could put her in to keep her separate.

This morning he sent the photo above and reports that she's alert and hungry! She's landed in a good forever home and hopefully her little kitten brain will forget all the trauma of yesterday.

(For anyone wondering why we didn't just keep her, we already have four cats and a dog. We're also at the age where a young cat is probably going to outlive us, and so we'd much rather have a kitten go to a good home with younger people.)

CarcharhinusFelix • You, sir, are a good person. Somehow I feel like someone has been cutting onions nearby. Godspeed to the small tortie. And good luck to her future staff; in my experience of torties, they'll need it!

darkest_irish_lass Handing over that kitten to the soft hearted construction worker will also help him heal. Sometimes bad things happen and animals die on construction sites. It's no one's fault, but the guilt and sorrow is real.

botgeek1 Both you and the construction guy are great people!

And now you've helped a bunch of internet strangers refill their faith in humanity and hope for a better tomorrow. Thanks friend! It's things like this that remind us that no matter what else we deal with, there's love, wisdom, capability, and kindness out there.
