24 Quintessential 90s Memes to Laugh, Cry, and Cry More About Life Before Modern Technology (June 7, 2025)

Hey there, people of the internet. Today is a tragic day. I went to the streaming service I use for music to listen to one of my favorite albums of all time, the soundtrack to the 1970 surreal Czech new wave film Valerie and Her Week of Wonders by composer Lubos Fiser. I went to listen like I do most days, only to my shock and horror that the platform has taken the soundtrack off. I am in disbelief that a work so beautiful and unique is no longer as easily accessible to audiences and listening ears. None of this has anything to do with 90s memes, but it should be mentioned anyhow.

But as a child of the 90s, music will always be a critical source of comfort for me. Growing up in a time where music was truly appreciated, and people had to know the names of the artists and songs they listened to by virtue of literally listening. These days, these streaming services, although incredible tools, can actually work against respect for music or the artist. In a world where playlists are curated by a robot, where you can just click on one song in an anthology instead of listening from beginning to end, it creates a disturbing dystopia of the musically bereft.

I'm in a desperate and cynical mood today, so here's to missing the perfect decade. The 90s was an incredible time. Back then, we actually had conversations with each other, people were satisfied to stare into space without fiddling with their phones, and dating was a sinch.
