We are CF. We have decided to get the finances and administration in order in the event of the unexpected. The first thing raised was the welfare of our 3yo Labrador.

My last will was 5 years ago before owning a dog. We have talked about 'what-ifs' and decided the best way forward was to prepare a trust fund for the dog, in the event we are both taken out at once (car accident etc).

We have vowed to pay for her food, vets and other costs for the rest of her expected life. Even in death I will pay for her. The trust fund is to be based on forecast average life span. All in All, the dog gets $150,000 and is the number one instruction in our wills. Any residual money returns to the Estate after the fact.

My family balked at the caveat and were shocked what I have placed in the will. My dog must have a quality of life equal or greater than the one she has now.

Secondly, family members are not exclusively to be selected. If they do not meet the set criteria it has been decided to bring a charity in to select the best home to her needs and our wants... even if it's a complete stranger.

I'd say we are the most well off in our family (being DINK's) and in short, the family are shocked that we have decided to give so much to a dog. Wait until they find out half of them are already on the blacklist based on how they treat their own pets!

I submitted this not to vent, but to make sure all here consider and prepare a world for the fur babies in the event you are taken away from them. As she has her head resting on my knee

you reflect and realise that we are their entire universe. Some people do not deserve this much loyalty... At the very least I can provide some back to her.

tinecuileog This is wise. But please. Consider talking to someone you trust and that you know would take care of the dog. I know of a similar situation where a dog has been left to someone
  • 12
and the money is taken care of out of an estate. They view the dog as a cheque. And the dog would frankly have been better going to someone who would have had the knowledge and training. He has bitten the new owner multiple times. And others.
  • 13
So please arrange for your dog of the time to go to a specific person who you know will care for and know how to live with the animal. Otherwise you are wise to consider the charity option

YoMamaSoFatSheBalls This reminds me of the lady in The Aristocats who was fabulously childfree and left her estate to the street cats of Paris. I love it.

SubjectiveAssertive Can I be the first to say you are yet to pay the pet tax? And I may suggest my parents do the same to ensure their pets. are looked after

Snoo33903 Please do not name a family member. Name a charity or specific animal rescue. I have personally seen a family member take a dog to get the inheritance and then six months later they put the dog down. I've also seen a

family member really try to take care of a dog but it just did not get along with her own dog. She ended up using the rescue I work with to rehome the dog, but a less informed person might just take them to the shelter, or worse
  • 18
rehomed them on Craigslist. And we all know the horror stories of dog fighters looking for bait dogs. on there.
  • 19
The truth is once your assets are distributed there is no follow up. Not unless you're a millionaire with an estate management lawyer who your estate will continue to pay to do check ups on the dog which is so expensive.
  • 20
You cannot trust family when it comes to money and your pets. Even a fellow animal lover. What if your dog doesn't get along with their dog? Suddenly they "rehome" your dog and who knows what environment they are going to.
  • 21
Professional rescues have great systems of checks ups and legal contracts that protect their dogs. They are also microchipped to the Rescue itself and never the adopter. So if the dog ends up in a shelter the rescue will be notified
  • 22
and they can reclaim the dog and begin legal consequences for the adopter if they abandoned the dog. Same way if they arrive at a vet in poor condition when the vet scans the microchip the rescue group will be notified. Many rescues also now require adopters to provide photo or video of their dog every 6 months to a year to prove its doing well.
  • 23
But good on you setting up your will. My estate goes to the rescue | got my three current dogs from and volunteer at in return for my dogs getting to stay together for the rest of their lives and be taken care of by the rescue.

[deleted] Even in death I will pay for her. This is so sweet. It really warms my heart when people go above and - beyond for their pets — as they should because pets are family.
  • 25
Be careful who gets to take care of your beloved dog. Some people will make grabby hands for her just because of the money she has.
