We can only hope that our in-laws love us for who we are, without all the falsities, the niceties, and everything in between. We deserve to be accepted by our partner's family with love, especially if we've never given them a surefire reason to dislike us in the first place. If you have a feeling that your in-laws are simply tolerating you, vocalize that to your partner. If they are the right ones for you, they will attempt to nip that ill behavior in the bud before it starts to affect your mental health. 

The husband in this next story does exactly that after years of his family excluding and shaming his wife. He explains that his family is upset she dragged him to the West Coast, but that's clearly a two-person decision. The family is nit-picky about everything his wife does, and goes so far as to give her no gifts or include her in anything holiday-related when they visit for the holidays.
