Most unspoken social rules are born from a desire to respect others and be respected in return. Sure, social norms change from place to place; in some countries, it is considered incredibly impolite to stare, and in others, it is just something that people do. However, there are some social rules that are simply universal. For example, no matter where you are in the world, you wouldn't go up to a stranger and take a bite out of their food.

One other such rule is that if you arrive uninvited to a dinner at a restaurant that required a reservation, causing the staff to scramble to accomodate the surprise, you shouldn't expect the host to pay for you. Maybe it isn't actually a universal rule because our protagonist's entitled cousins did just that in our story today. His wife let him know later that she felt embarrassed by his apparent stinginess and unwillingness to pay for their meal, but maybe she should've been embarrassed at her cousins' entitledness instead.

It's really unbelievable. Not that it matters if it's a brother or sister, but it also just sounds like the family members that showed up by surprise were not even that close to our protagonist's wife. They just wanted a free meal.
