Pregnant woman tells her sister to rename her dog so she can use the name for her baby instead: '[She called me a] selfish child-free moron who cares more about a dog than her future niece.'

AITA for refusing to “give up” my dog’s name so my sister can use it for her baby?

I (29 F) have a 3-year-old golden retriever named Aurora. I picked the name because when my late mom read us bedtime stories, Sleeping Beauty was her favorite and we'd always yell "AURORA!" together at the dragon part. The name is a daily reminder of mom and honestly got me through her passing.

My sister "Emily" (31 F) is 28 weeks pregnant with her first child. Two weeks ago at a family BBQ she announced she'd chosen the perfect name: Aurora. I smiled and said "Great choice—she'll share with the world's goofiest dog.” That's when everything blew up.

Emily pulled me aside and said: 1. It's tacky for cousins/nieces to share a name with a pet. 2. I've "had my fun," so I should rename my dog or at least stop using the name publicly (Aurora has an Insta with ~8 k followers).

    3. If I keep the name, I'm "stealing her moment" and dishonoring our mom because "real daughters name babies after moms, not dogs."

I told her Aurora's name is staying. It's on vet records, training certificates, microchip forms— changing it feels wrong and pointless. I suggested plenty of alternatives (Aria, Aurelia, Rory) and offered to make Aurora my dog's official middle name on Insta so her baby would still be the only human Aurora in the family.

Emily refused, started crying, and called me "a selfish child-free moron who cares more about a dog than her future niece." Dad tried mediating; he thinks I should compromise "because babies matter more than dogs." Our

matter more than dogs." Our brother says Emily is being ridiculous. Group chat has been on fire for days and I'm getting texts like "Enjoy ruining my first Mother's Day" (??).

Yesterday Emily nuked the situation by posting a poll on Facebook: "Should my sister rename her dog so my baby can have the name?"-tagging me.

Now half the extended family is voting, and people I barely know are DM-ing me opinions. I muted everything and took Aurora on a long hike.

Family dinner is this Sunday and Dad says I'm expected to apologize to "keep the peace." I feel backed into a corner but also wonder if I'm being petty over “just a dog name." AITA?

scsoutherngal Tell your sister that you would be overjoyed for her to name her child after your dog. NTA

CommunicationEasy142 My sister called her daughter the same name as our brother's dog and it was a total non-issue. It's just a name. Your sister needs to get some real problems to worry about.

    calvin-not-Hobbes so...your sister is a narcissist.

anditurnedaround Just to make sure I understand..,, you named your dog first right? Why would she name her child after your known dog name and then expect you to change your dogs name. That's ridiculous. She knew. She made her voice. It's fine if they both have the same name but no mistake she made that choice, not you.

ChessingtonSurrey NTA. Realistically, your niece will outlive your dog. But as she grows up she will probably think it's cool having the same name as your dog... I would find it a non issue.
