“You’re not paid to talk, you’re paid to work” - so I stopped talking completely

I (18F) work at a small café with a pretty chill team. During downtime, we usually talk while cleaning or prepping. Nothing crazy just light conversation that makes the shift bearable.

One day, our new shift lead (who clearly wanted to assert dominance) snapped at me and said: "You're not paid to socialize. You're paid to work. Less talking, more doing.” I said, "Okay."

From that moment on, I went completely silent. No greetings. No "excuse me." No warning when stuff was behind someone. Just silent working robot mode.

She asked me something later, and I just pointed. She asked, "Why aren't you answering?" I replied, "I'm not paid to talk."

Next shift? She told me, "Okay, obviously some communication is fine." Got it, boss.

sysadminbj This is a lesson every manager needs to learn. It sounds like this person is maybe learning it.

awesomealicex OP Exactly - sometimes the best way to teach it is to let them experience the consequences of their own rules. I think this one finally got the message.

The_Wineo As a manager, you are to support and teach. That what I've been told. I'll clear tables, wash glasses, take the trash. I hired you for job help me help you.

Tekuzo Every manager that thinks that discipline is the only management technique needs to go back under the rock they came from.

_secretshaman_ I'm a manager, and I greet all employees everyday asking how their weekend was or whatnot. We all chit chat while we work, it builds the bond and doesn't take away from our work. If an employee is prioritizing talking over working to the point they're distracting others I will have a quiet private conversation with them about how I need their

help to get everyone to focus by picking their moments and understanding everyone is the main character in their own story but we should be mindful. It's not that hard. Some managers s k. I've had my own share.

piddlesthethug The amount of managers, 2-3 levels above the workers they interact with that don't introduce themselves and let people know their title is obscene... Let alone just interact in a normal human way. If you can fire me, you should at least tell me your position. How do I figure out if you're someone giving me a valid order or some Karen saying some nonsense otherwise?

verkadalai Keep staying quiet. There will come a point where she insists you be social. That's your time to ask for a raise in exchange for being social.
  • 17
еср001 insists you be social. Time to request clarification of social including limits/boundaries. What training is available? What standards are to be met?

Queasy_Caramel5435 I'd try to go on with the "mute game". I'd even escalate it. Don't pray for rain when you can't deal with the mud, managers.
  • 19
awesomealicex OP Haha honestly I was so tempted to keep the silent act going. You said it perfectly - if you ask for control, don't be shocked when it actually shows up.

pdxblazer Realistically they would just fire you and hire someone else

3amGreenCoffee I think we've all worked with that 18 year old who just wouldn't shut up. Some of us had to learn the hard way that we were that 18 year old.

bamf1701 Ah, yes. New managers who want to flex their muscles on the first day to show just how stupid they are, I mean, that they are in charge.
  • 23
xubax I'm of two minds on this. Some people pause their working when they talk. Which I used to be guilty of. I'd be raking leaves (high school job) with my boss, and I'd stop to talk, and he'd say, "Can't you rake and talk at the same time?" So, sure, you're not a machine, you can't work like a machine, but you can minimize the effect on your work by being conscious of whether you're keeping up.

Las Vegan Your pointing like a robot cracked me up. I'm glad the lead learned to lighten up.
